SCHOOL, Inc. Contracts with Pasadena Unified School District
to bring Trauma-Informed Care Initiative to the City of Pasadena

PASADENA, Calif. – April 3, 2018 – 501(c)(3) Smiling Calm Hearts Open Our Learning, Inc. (SCHOOL, Inc.) is awarded a 3 year contract with Pasadena Unified School District to provide training services to educators within a city-wide outreach program entitled Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative.

Bradley C. Call, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of UniHealth Foundation issued a grant award letter to Huntington Hospital, in partnership with Young & Healthy and Pasadena Unified School District for restricted funding over 36-months to provide support for the Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative. SCHOOL, Inc. has been selected by Pasadena Unified School District to provide the SCHOOL Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Training to all PUSD teachers to fulfill this grant requirement.

The Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative will be led by Ann Rector, PUSD - Director Health Programs and School Support Services; Mary Donnelly - Crocker, Young & Healthy -Executive Director; and Lori J. Morgan MD, Huntington Hospital - President & CEO.

Based in Los Angeles, UniHealth Foundation is an independent private health care foundation serving LA communities for more than 21 years. Their mission states, “We are committed to being a pace-setter in health philanthropy, identifying and supporting innovative activities, while provoking and sustaining changes that positively impact health outcomes.”

SCHOOL, Inc. will train approximately 546 PUSD teachers from Transitional Kindergarten through 12th grade. Additional services personnel will also join the SCHOOL Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Trainings in order that nurses, counselors and other support staff learn mindfulness methods to help youth navigate education proactively and in greater health. SCHOOL, Inc. will provide tools, strategies and evidence-based mindfulness techniques to enhance the learning potential for students and classroom management techniques for teachers.

According to 2018/19 statistics, Pasadena Unified School District includes an estimate of 16,340 students (TK - 12) with 61.6% socio-economically disadvantaged, 15.8% English Learners and 14.6% disabled. More than half of the student population is Hispanic (60%).
