Los Angeles Unified School District Approves
SCHOOL, Inc. for Salary Point Status

PASADENA, CA (November 12, 2013) – Smiling Calm Hearts Open Our Learning, Inc. (SCHOOL, Inc.) is pleased to announce LAUSD-UTLA Joint Salary Point Credit Committee has approved SCHOOL Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training of 45 hours (15 hour in-person plus 30 hours additional coursework) for Los Angeles Unified School District educators to earn one salary point.

The SCHOOL Kids Yoga Program, led by Founder and CEO, Kelly Wood, is successfully aligned with California Common Core State Standards (English Language Arts) and Health & Physical Education Standards for grades K-12. The program supports youth across all economic, social and cultural diversity in LAUSD--the second largest school district in the country--serving over 700,000 students with well over half of students from low income poverty households.

Educators gain simple tools to address the physical, mental, emotional and social well-being students and themselves. SCHOOL’s professional development course gives educators mindfulness methods to improve academic achievement and collaborative attitudes.

A research study, conducted by Murray & Malmgrem in 2005, shows that students in high-poverty urban schools may benefit from positive teacher-student relationships more than students in high-income schools because of the risks associated with poverty. The SCHOOL Kids Yoga Program emphasizes social emotional learning to develop self-confidence, perseverance and cooperation in classrooms to support academic success, thereby countering affects of anxiety, depression and poor self-esteem.

“SCHOOL, Inc. trains teachers on how to use calming methods within their classrooms and thereby reaches a minimum of 23 students per teacher,” said Kelly Wood. “We are proud to have an extensive and long-term collaborative relationship with the Los Angeles Unified School District since 2002.” She added: “Our program and professional development course is one of the first adapted yoga curriculums to be approved by a major school district as we strongly adhere to academic and district standards to support academic rigor.”
